Group Therapy

Connection, Support, and Healing

The idea of attending therapy group for sex addiction or porn addiction can seem scary.

Feelings of guilt, shame, isolation, despair, and loneliness can be overwhelming.

The hardest group session is always the first because of the vulnerability involved.

You may wonder how sharing your story with other people can help you or them.

But by listening to others, you begin to understand that you’re not alone.

And, as confusing as this may seem, when we shed the light on the darkness of the soul, it fades away.

That’s when the healing begins.

Experience hope when you’re at your lowest.

When most people start group, they’re fearful.

But as they continue, they realize it’s life-changing benefits. Including a new camaraderie, almost like the passengers of a shipwreck being rescued. Finally, relief from the bondage of self!

“I couldn’t have done it without my group. It’s been the most important part of my recovery.”

Groups help build a culture of support, promote connection, and offer professional guidance.

Johann Hari, a leading addiction researcher stated in his findings, “The antidote for addiction is connection.”

So, let’s do this.

A Formula for Group Success

Participate: Make the effort to be part of the group.

Share what’s comfortable for you, but also push your own limits.

That doesn’t mean you have to share every time, but the more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of the process.

Willingness: Be open to the process.

Make a commitment to take a stance of curiosity and ask others who have been in the group how it has been for them.

Share: Be willing to give to others and be willing to receive.

You may not realize this, but your story will be important to others, as their story of recovery will be important to you.

Give It Some Time: It takes a few sessions to get comfortable and understand the process of group therapy.

If you feel uncomfortable, or it seems at first that the group is not a good fit for you, make a commitment to yourself to attend for a few weeks before deciding what you want to do.

Most likely by that time, you will understand the power of the group.
